“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” says Grange, as he reaches for a wrench. “Of course Blanche and I disagree on the essentials again. Blanche believes that if there hadn’t been the Nile, Civilization would have never grown up. Me, I believe Civilization would have found somewhere else to grow up. Something like Civilization would have grown up anyhow. Anyway, it seems to me when Civilization did grow up, it left the Nile and moved further north. I used to think it settled up around the Rhine until the war. All that uncivilized behavior amongst people I always thought the most civilized, and they are some of my own ancestors. I don’t believe I know where Civilization is today. It don’t stay put. Civilization moves around plenty and it can stay with any people. It is not one man’s invention, or one woman’s either.”

He works on his tractor, doing something that makes him sound like a nutcracker; he knocks on metal.

“So now whenever anyone says Memphis, I ask them which one they mean. Memphis ain’t just Tennessee. Ha. Ha. They musta thought the Mississippi River was the New Nile. ‘Art for Eternity,’ that’s a concept Blanche says we got from the Egyptians, the idea of art as not just for now, but for always.”
